Vt. soldiers on leave from the war zone

Fairfax, Vermont - May 19, 2010

"Being back home is a little surreal," said Capt. Miles Trudell of the Vt. National Guard. "It makes you appreciate it that much more what you have."

Trudell has a 16-month-old daughter and his wife Dana at home in Fairfax who he's visiting during a two-week leave from a tour in Afghanistan.

"Fighting the tears here and there because I know he has to go back," Dana Trudell said.

His first deployment was in 2003 to Afghanistan, the second started earlier this year-- training the Afghanistan National Army and mentoring them in security measures. Although he isn't on the front lines, Miles Trudell says being safe is a priority.

"It's just one of those things where you always have to be on your guard," he said. "You have to remain vigilant, you have to look out for each other and you have to be aware of your surroundings."

And says he couldn't do it without the support of the state behind him.

"It's fun to know we have that support, but I still feel very humbled when we get off the plane everyone was clapping," Miles Trudell said.

Although halfway through his second tour, the end can't come soon enough.

"When he gets back, we're going to pick up where we left off, and be a family again," Dana Trudell said. "I look forward to that."

The captain also has a special message to Vermonters across the state.

"Thank you," he said. "Thanks for all the support, the big thing, what we've seen in the communities is just an outpouring of support, so from me to you, thanks."

Capt. Miles Trudell departs Vermont to go back to Afghanistan on June 3.
