Inmate's death leads to changes in Corrections Department
St. Albans, Vermont - May 27, 2010
The death of a female inmate has led to changes at the Vermont Corrections Department.
Ashley Ellis, 23, died last August after she didn't get her medication to treat anorexia. Ellis was serving 30-days for a driving violation.
The group Disability Rights Vermont investigated. DRV determined that the Vt. Corrections Department needs to better identify inmates with medical needs, inform all staff of those medical needs, and have an adequate nursing staff on duty during all shifts. The group is working with Corrections officials to change protocols.
