Olympic bobsledders deployed with Vt. Guard

Lake Placid, New York - June 9, 2010

A pair of Olympic bobsledders are about to be deployed for overseas duty with the Vermont Guard.

Sgt. John Napier of Lake Placid, N.Y., drove the USA-2 sled to a fourth place finish in the Vancouver winter games. He expected to join his fellow Vermont guard members in Afghanistan right after the games. But he didn't get the call until last week.

During an interview in March, Napier talked about his opportunity to serve and compete through the Army's World Class Athletes Program.

"We have an amazing opportunity and a blessing to be supported by the U.S. Army to do our sports and go to the Olympics and represent our country," Napier said, "but I'd also like to show America and our nation and the army that we're willing to do more and we can do more for the army."

Napier's teammate and fellow Vermont National guardsman, Lt. Chris Fogt of Utah, is also being deployed. He's going to Iraq.
