Deployed Vt. Guard member wins new job

Colchester, Vermont - June 18, 2010

Sandra Barbieri's husband, Lincoln, is on a dangerous mission with the Vermont National Guard, helping detect IEDs.

"He's in the mountains of Afghanistan," she said. "It's not easy work, so he deals with a lot of ground missiles, so he's a mortarman."

Lincoln is about halfway through a year-long deployment.

Reporter Kristin Carlson: What's been the hardest part about having your husband deployed?

Sandra Barbieri: Well for one because he is such a great father-- not having him there for my boys. And just not having my soulmate next to me-- it's been challenging, it's been lonesome and everything.

The deployment was made even more stressful because right before it started Lincoln lost his job with the state as part of budget cuts. Guard jobs are only protected once a deployment starts. But eight months after first sharing her story with us, Sandra Barbieri got the news she'd been waiting for-- the state now has a new position for Lincoln as a probation and parole officer.

"We're ecstatic that we were able to come to resolution on this," Vt. Corrections Commissioner Andy Pallito said.

Pallito says the state wanted to keep Lincoln's 21-years experience and it also seemed like the right thing to do; it just took awhile to communicate between Afghanistan, the union and human resources.

"I can't even begin to think about what he was feeling kind of hanging out there," Pallito said. "I'm excited to put his mind at ease."

"It takes a lot of weight off his shoulders and he's able to focus on his mission even more," Sandra Barbieri said.

She says every phone call Lincoln wanted to know about his job, his future. She has no way to call her husband, so it was several days before she shared the exciting news. "He's coming home to a job, he's coming home to his family and a lot of support and it can't get any better than that."
