South Hero, Vermont - June 30, 2010
I've noticed that creemee customers have similar behavior patterns to butterflies in summer; they both appear to be solar-powered creatures. You generally only see butterflies fluttering about when it is sunny, and when it is cloudy, they disappear. When we arrived at Seb's, it was cloudy and cool with a few sprinkles and the parking lot was empty on the last day of June! Then the sun broke through, and cars pulled in with a young family, some twenty-somethings, an older couple out for a drive, and a middle-aged man stopped on his bike for a creemee break. The clouds came back, and the people disappeared. This cycle repeated itself a few times in about an hour and a half; as the sun disappeared so did the customers, and when the sun reappeared the customers came back like butterflies over a summer field. I'm sure this place will be packed over this holiday weekend when it is hot and sunny!
Personally, I can eat creemees any time of year. If someone was selling them, I'd buy them for an après ski treat. But for most, this is a summer treat and Seb's is a favorite spot for those traveling through the Champlain Islands. I counted an equal number of out-of-state plates and Vermont plates in the parking lot. Seb's is right on Rt. 2 next to the Post Office in town, so you can't miss it. There is a gift shop for the tourists who are here camping in the state parks or staying in one of the cabins in the islands, and the snack bar has burgers, red hots and fries.
And the ice cream? They have vanilla and chocolate and vanilla and chocolate twist creemees with the beloved chocolate and butterscotch hard coatings if you wish and they also have a gazillion different flavors of hard ice cream. I sampled the vanilla creemee with the butterscotch coating, and the peppermint ice cream with chocolate sprinkles on it. I can see why this is a favorite summer spot for so many of you, a visit to the Champlain Islands is a treat in itself, and the creemees and ice cream cones at Seb's are some of the best in the land!
