Vt soldier killed in Afghanistan

Colchester, Vermont - July 3, 2010

It was a somber Independence Day weekend at Camp Johnson following the news that a Vermont Guardsmen stationed in Afghanistan has died.

Specialist Ryan Grady, 25, of West Burke, was killed Friday morning when his military vehicle was struck by an IED or roadside bomb near Bagram Airbase while out on patrol with a small convoy. Specialist Grady served as a combat engineer and was also awarded a purple heart for injuries sustained in Operation Iraqi Freedom.

Four other Vermont guardsmen were injured in the vehicle struck the roadside bomb. General Dubie told WCAX News that they are listed in serious to very serious condition. Three of the guardsmen are in Germany, the other guardsman is still at Bagram. General Dubie also says that this tragedy should be remembered by all Vermonters on America's birthday.

Specialist Grady's brother and father are both in the Vermont National Guard. His brother is also in Afghanistan, but is currently on his way back to the states.

Specialist Grady was part of the Bradford Armory.
