Way before the Burlington bike path was even a thought, a Queen City business was renting canoes and selling penny candy. The penny candy is now gone but everything else is the same. Photographer Joe Carroll introduces us to the Auer Family Boathouse, a brother and sister team that take pride in being stuck in another century.
Christine: Most of the people on the bike path are either going to work or going home from work, so we don't get a lot of local people. Well I'm Christine Auer Hebert, I'm part owner of the Auer Family Boathouse. (Plays Piano)My mother played silent movies that was her piano.
Customer: Yeah , I don't know that everyone knows about it.
Christine: There's not a better view anyplace! (runs to answer the phone) I'm coming! I'm 83 and when the telephone rings, I run.
Charlie: I'm Charlie Auer Jr. The man in charge and the woman that knows what's going on! My sister and I run the place, we've been doing it for a long time.
Girl in store: Can I get a fruit punch?
Christine: Yes. We don't want to change it, this is the way my folks had it.
Another customer: It looks the same as when I was little and I love it.
Christine: And I'll show you where the boat is. (showing two people the row boats) No pay the taxes are hard. But at least it holds the land.
Reporter: How would you describe this place?
Charlie: Probably the most relaxing place in the City of Burlington.
Christine: I hate to see condo's, but there's nobody to take over. Like my brother was saying the day, ya know the old folks don't come anymore, I miss em. I said Charlie, think about it, who's the old folks now!
Christine: It's a....you can't go any further, you either go in the lake or you go in the river, but this is the end of Burlington.
