WCAX crew returns from Afghanistan

Burlington International Airport - August 13, 2010

Two weeks after leaving for Afghanistan, Channel 3's Darren Perron and Lance MacKenzie returned to family and friends.

"I was saying to Darren coming in, 'Wow, there are trees here, you know, the landscape there-- as striking as it is and as awesome as it is-- there aren't many trees around," Lance said.

They brought back firsthand accounts of life in Afghanistan for the Vermont National Guard.

"We didn't know what to expect when we got there, but every time we turned around it seemed like there was another story to tell. So we have so much material... looking forward to putting it together," Darren said.

"The first thing that comes to mind-- gosh, I'm going to get emotional here-- the professionalism that these guys are doing, they really think they are making a difference there," Lance said.

They witnessed the guard on patrol, an arrest of suspected Taliban insurgents and what life is like in and around the Bagram base.

"Our Vermont guard members are providing water sources so other villages now have water supplies, they are handing out school supplies making sure girls are educated, so it really runs the gamut as to what we witnessed there," Darren said. "It was a frightening, fascinating, educational and emotional trip. We learned so much about what is going on in that country and what our Vermont guard members are doing and really looking forward to putting these stories together to show another side of this war effort that we don't get by just having the national media there."

Now that Darren and Lance are back, so is the video. They have hours of video to review and we will show you as much as we can starting Monday.
