Newport Center, Vermont - August 13, 2010
A flagger in a construction zone was killed Friday afternoon. The accident happened in Newport Center on Route 14 near the intersection with Route 100.
Police say John Matten, 76, of Newport Center, was driving a pickup truck when he hit and killed Zachariah Brown, 33, of Derby. Brown was directing traffic as crews were repaving the road.
Police say it appears Matten was distracted-- not speeding or drunk.
