Brattleboro, Vermont - August 30, 2010
A local prisoners' rights group is suing an out-of-state company that provided health care to Vermont prisoners.
Prison Legal News, of Brattleboro, wants courts to order Tennessee-based Prison Health Services to release details of any lawsuits the company has settled in Vermont. The company, now known as PHS, was contracted by the Vermont Department of Corrections from 2005 to 2009. A records request was rejected last month, but the group argues PLH is a public agency and therefore subject to the state's public records law.
The records they're seeking could include information about a settlement between PLH and the family of Ashley Ellis. The 23-year-old died last August after she didn't get her medication to treat anorexia. Ellis was serving 30 days for a driving violation.
Prison Legal News wants to know if there were other cases like this one related to quality of care.
