Is it too early for fall foliage?

September 23, 2010

It may be early, but we decided to go out and see it if was too early to start looking for fall foliage! We knew to start in the north, and see if there was some early color there. Photographer Bob Davis and I headed out from Highgate.

One of the best ways to find out where the local color is is to stop in at a local business. And if that business happens to have sticky buns, so much the better! Joey Russo has a special business right on Route 78 in Highgate, it's small, but there is something for everybody!

"One thing that people really seem to like is that I serve breakfast all day."

He also sells everything from original art, to baked goods to maple sugar candy from his own sugarhouse. But once we stocked up on a few necessities, we still needed to find the foliage. Joey drives to Highgate from Belvidere, and he told us there was some good color starting, especially along RT 109.

He is right. There are some spots of brilliant color, especially when get into the hills and mountains. We took a detour from Joey's route, and stopped at Lake Carmi. Bob and Carol King were putting their boat in the water to go walleye fishing. They thought there wasn't much for color right there, but they had seen some spots of bright color on their way to the lake.

Being on Lake Carmi is pretty any time of year, but we headed up into the higher elevations in search of more color.

Our travels took us to Montgomery where we found a special way to enjoy the season.

"Bark, bark, bark... "

At Montgomery Adventures, they run their sled dogs during foliage, pulling carts.

It is loud when they are hitching up the dogs, but once they are going, it is a quiet and very pleasant way to take in the scenery.

"Go kids go!"

It is beautiful already in Montgomery, and as the temperatures fall, and the leaves become even brighter, the dogs and the travelers will be even happier.
