Burlington, Vermont - November 15, 2010

Mission Afghanistan is over for some Vermont National guard members.

Melody Marckres and her three children waited anxiously in the terminal at Burlington International Airport Monday. Their father and husband have been in Afghanistan with the Vermont National Guard for over a year now. "It's been a long year. A little stressful, but we made it and we're here," Marckres said.

Her husband, Sgt. Maj. Gary Marckres, and the four other soldiers returning today are part of the 86th infantry brigade combat team. They were the first to leave the U.S. and the first to enter eastern Afghanistan, now their families are just glad to have them home. "We're going to go home and be a family. We don't have any plans for the next couple of days," Marckres said.

"Missed these guys a lot. It was a long time away. They did a great job, very appreciative of my wife and the job she did with the kids," Sgt. Maj. Marckres said.

The Marckres family says the year's been tough but being able to see each other on Skype helped them to deal with the distance. "That was huge and he could see the children everyday -- catch up with them and he wasn't so left out," Marckres said.

"Skype is a great thing. To be able to stay in touch with the family and actually see them is a godsend," agreed Sgt. Maj Marckres.

Now he says he just needs the rest of his Green Mountain brothers to join him in going home. "Hurry up and get home. We're looking forward to getting everyone home safe," he said.

The National Guard is expecting its first of many charters by midweek of next week, and eventually hopes to have all its members home shortly after Christmas.
