Group opposes F-35, Lockheed deal

Burlington, Vermont - January 21, 2011

The prospect of the new F-35 jet coming to the Vermont Air Guard has some Vermonters angry. They met at City Hall in Burlington Thursday night, calling on the mayor to not go forward with a deal with the F-35's maker, Lockheed Martin.

The Vermont Guard is a finalist for the jets. But these folks are just as concerned about the agreement Mayor Bob Kiss, P-Burlington, signed with Lockheed to work together on climate change. The idea is to leverage Lockheed's capital and scientific know how to test green technology in Burlington that could be used to help cut greenhouse gases in bigger cities.

"Burlington says no to the militarization of Burlington, and to supporting war profiteers. We do not need huge war profiteers to partner with on climate change," said Amanda Calder of the Stop the F-35 Coalition.

The mayor was not at the gathering. The group hopes he's willing to hold a meeting to hear the public's concerns directly.
