A canoeist in the Adirondacks is being sued for paddling through private land.
Phil Brown is the editor of the Adirondack Explorer newspaper. He recently wrote about a canoe trip he made from Lake Lila to Little Tupper Lake using a waterway crossing owned by the Brandreth Park Association. That group is now suing him for trespassing.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation is hoping to intervene in the case, arguing the public has the right to paddle on any navigable waterway even if the shore is private.
