"This is a big geographical area but a small community. We know each other across town boundaries. We all feel deeply," said Alan Parker of Danville.

The town of Danville lost one of their own a world away in Afghanistan.

Marine Corporal Ian Muller, 22, died conducting combat operations in the Helmand province in Afghanistan Friday. That's in the dangerous southern part of Afghanistan where Marine commanders recently announced great strides in their fight against insurgents. Muller was a member of the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Force out of Camp Lejeune, North Carolina.

"My heart breaks for a family in a situation like that," Parker said.

The Muller family is well known in the community. Alan Parker's son used to play pickup soccer with Ian in his teen years, but most know the Mullers for their work at the farmers market.

"They are a wonderful family," said Laurel Stanley of Danville. "The children were wonderful to talk with. When we would get our bread there was always a line buying their breads."

"We have met all of the children," Parker said. "They are a wonderful local family."

Muller is the sixth Vermonter to lose his life fighting in Afghanistan, but to the people in Danville he is anything but another statistic.

"We as a town are feeling there are just too many tragedies happening," Stanley said. "We are really sad about that."
