Lake Champlain power line project clears hurdle

Plattsburgh, New York - March 23, 2011

A plan to run power lines under Lake Champlain is one step closer to happening.

Toronto-based Transmission Developers has received approval from the New York Independent System Operator, one of several entities that must sign off on the project.

The company is still seeking federal permits for the $1.9 billion proposal, commonly known as the Champlain Hudson Power Express.

If approved, workers would bury two 5-inch cables on the New York side of the lake. Those lines would carry power to the New York City market starting in 2015.
