The former Ira town treasurer has pleaded guilty to his part in an embezzlement scheme.
The 59-year-old, who held the post for over 30 years, entered the plea Monday to wire fraud during a hearing in U.S. District Court in Brattleboro.
Hewitt allegedly embezzled 400-thousand to pay his bills by writing checks from the town to himself. Sentencing is set for Aug. 8. He could get 20 years in prison and $250,000 in fines.
