Health center expansions take budget hit

Burlington, Vermont - April 25, 2011

There are a total of eight Federal Qualified Community Health Centers in 40 different locations in Vermont. They provide primary health care to people regardless of their ability to pay.

The health center in Burlington's North End is under going an 11.3 million dollar expansion thanks to federal stimulus money. Construction began last fall, but a recently passed continuing resolution for this fiscal year has reduced funding for the health Centers by 600 million dollars nationally. Despite the cuts, Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt), a major supporter of the clinics, says the existing projects will eventually be completed.

"We have seen a cutback in the expansion money which means we are going to reach our goal later than I want, but there has not been a cutback in any of the existing programs so nobody who is accessing CHC in Vermont or any place else is going to lose their ability to do that," he said.

Other Vermont projects underway include $850 Thousand dollars for a new health center being built in downtown Enosburg Falls.
