An Essex Junction woman will stand trial for allegedly murdering her 16-year-old niece even though the murder weapon in the case is still missing.
Latonia Congress, 31, allegedly stabbed and killed Shatavia Alford in October of 2009, after the two got into an argument over some laundry. The knife allegedly used in the murder disappeared from the crime scene.
Defense attorneys argued the weapon may point to someone else so they asked that the case be thrown out. On Tuesday, however, Judge Michael Kupersmith ruled that the case can go to trial. Jury selection will begin Monday. The trial is expected to take at least two weeks.
