Fire forces Essex Jct. family out of their home

Essex Junction, Vermont - May 5, 2011

A garage fire late Thursday afternoon forced an Essex Junction family out of their home.

Rescue crews from Essex, Essex Town and Williston responded to the home on Mansfield Avenue just after 4 p.m.

Homeowners said they saw smoke coming out of the attached garage which quickly became engulfed in flames.

Fire officials were unable to save the garage or the car inside and are calling it a total loss.

"The homeowner made the call to 911. It actually started in the car; they had a car in the garage. The car fire made its way through the garage, and into the house," Essex Junction Fire Chief Chris Gabioriault said.

Fire officials say the house suffered moderate structural and electrical damage. They said the family would not be able to return home Thursday night.
