Power help for low-incomers

MONTPELIER, Vt. (AP) - Some low-income Vermonters are another step closer to getting help paying for the electricity they use.

An official at the Public Service Board has approved a plan to create an Energy Support Program for low income Vermonters. The Vermont chapter of AARP says Vermont is the only state in the Northern US without such a program.

The program would mandate that Central Vermont Public Service and Green Mountain Power create the program for their customers. AARP says the program will be funded by ratepayers of CVPS and GMP, the state's two largest electric utilities.

Eligible customers would save about $20 a month on their electric bills, giving them a savings of about 25 percent. The plan must still be approved by the Public Service Board.
