Learning to drive a team of draft horses

New Haven, Vermont – June 2, 2011

Draft horses are big horses that do tough, heavy tasks, typically on farms.  At Thornapple Farm, they take visitors on wagon ride and sleighrides. They're even used to pick up the trash and recycling in the town of Bristol.

Mike McCune visited Thornapple Farm to try his hand at driving a team where he met Jake and Jerry, a pair of 5-year old Percheron draft horses and owner Pat Palmer.

"Percherons are all born black," explained Pat Palmer, "some stay black and some turn pure white. This pair will turn pure white eventually."

"You actually think I'll be able to control these two," laughed McCune.

"This pair, anybody can control." replied Palmer, about the gentle giants.
