Police: Missing Essex couple's disappearance suspicious

Essex, Vermont - June 9, 2011

Colbert Street is a quiet suburban road in Essex. But police say something is just not right at the home of Bill and Lorraine Currier.

"They left their medications behind. Medications that they need to take daily and it looked as though they left rather hastily," Essex Police Cpl. Christina Ashley said.

A family member called police Thursday morning after discovering that neither Bill nor Lorraine showed up for work, telling police it was out of character for the couple.

"We have no idea why they're gone or how they have left," Ashley said.

But the Curriers' green Saturn sedan is also gone. Police say the Essex couple disappeared from their home sometime between 5 p.m. Wednesday and 10 a.m. Thursday.

Neighbors were shocked to hear the Curriers are missing.

"They were in their pool yesterday," said Pat Godard, who has lived across the street from the Curriers for a couple of years.

Godard says nothing about the Curriers has ever raised a red flag.

"They've always seemed to be a quiet couple. You know tended to themselves, took care of their lawn, had family gatherings," she said.

WCAX News has learned that the couple's Ruger handgun may also be missing from the home. But police on the scene would not confirm or deny this information.

"I'm actually kind of nervous about the whole situation because I don't know what that all means as far as them or anyone else in the neighborhood," Godard said.

Police will continue to follow leads and try to fill in the blanks-- little consolation for family members and neighbors left with so many questions about this suspicious disappearance.

Bill Currier is 49. He's described as a white man, about 6' tall and 220 pounds. Lorraine Currier is 55. She's a white woman, about 5'3" and 160 pounds with brown hair. They may be driving a dark green Saturn sedan bearing VT registration ABF-818.

Anyone with information on the Curriers' whereabouts is asked to contact Essex Police at 802-878-8331.
