On a rainy Saturday a pair of lacrosse state champions were crowned and Vermont track and field standouts shined at the New England championships.
At Castleton State, the Rice boys and Chelsea girls claimed Division Two lacrosse state titles Saturday. Rice held off Green Mountain Valley School for a 10-9 win, while Chelsea pulled away in the second half to beat Oxbow 16-10.
Vermonters had a big day at the 66th New England Track & Field Championships at Burlington High School.
South Burlington's quartet of Amadan Arena, Sara Garvey, Mollie Gribbin and Carly Stine surprised everyone by winning the 4X100 relay, setting a new state record in the process with a time of 49.3 seconds.
Gribbin also finished second in the triple jump, setting another state mark with a jump of 39 feet, 11 1/2 inches.
Springfield's Michael Pianka won the boys high jump with a leap of 6 feet, 7 inches.
In other top performances, Michael DiMambro of Essex came in second in the 100 meters and Burlington's Tor Dworshak placed third in the boys triple jump.
