Charges against Abenaki chief temporarily dropped

St. Albans, Vermont - June 16, 2011

Charges that an Abenaki tribal chief exploited a person in her care have been dismissed, but it's only temporary. Franklin County Prosecutor Jim Hughes says he plans to refile more specific felony charges against April St. Francis Merrill in the next two weeks.

Merrill was charged in March with taking money from a senior citizen and spending it on food, gas, and other purchases for herself. The man is now deceased, but he and his sister questioned $30,000 in ATM withdrawals and debit card purchases.

Merrill maintained her innocence saying all of the money was spent on the man's behalf.

Merrill is the head of the Sokoki band of the Abenaki in Swanton.
