LCI Fishing Derby reels in Father's Day fun

South Hero, Vermont - June 20, 2011

This year's LCI Fishing Derby is a wrap and early reports indicate it has been a good tournament.

"We have seen quite a few fish checked in, more than I think the last couple of years. Very good on the salmon and bass, not as many lake trout which is kind of unusual," said Don Tobi, and LCI weight station captain.

Tobi says the number of people entered in the tournament seemed to be down, due, he thinks, to publicity over flooding and debris. But the lake level dropped by the weekend and the sun came out making conditions much better for fishing. That is good news for the local economy.

"Lots of people come from out of state and they need a place to stay need to buy food, they buy bait, buy gas, buy fishing supplies, so it's a great boost for the economy," Tobi said.

But you don't need fancy equipment to take part in the tournament.

"You don't have to have a $40,000 boat to catch a winning fish," Tobi said. "We have families fishing from the shoreline bringing in fish to be weighed. I had a couple of guys this morning who caught an 8-pound salmon fishing off the shoreline which is probably third or fourth."

Paul Royer and his sister Angie Allard caught their 3-pound plus bass in a canoe.

"We fish in a canoe so we took a break, had my brother before, then I took my sister out in the afternoon and she said we will go to deep water and got a hold of that guy and hoping we didn't lose it," Royer said.
