Burlington, Vermont - June 30, 2011
Summer is in full swing and that means it may be time to take a trip to a drive-in movie theater.
The St. Albans drive-in is one of only four still left in Vermont. There were once 20 drive-in theaters in Vermont and as many as 5,000 across the United States.
The first drive-in theater opened in Camden, N.J., in the 1920s. The largest drive-in ever built was in New York. That theater could fit as many as 2,500 vehicles. Drive-in theaters started to decline in the late 1950s.
There are about 600 still in existence today.
