Colebrook, New Hampshire - July 1, 2011
Federal regulators permanently shut down a Colebrook company that made a type of gunpowder following a deadly explosion there last year.
The president of Black Mag, Craig Sanborn, of Maidstone, Vt., agreed to drop an appeal of an OSHA ruling saying he and the company should never again employ anyone in an explosive manufacturing business.
The explosion at the Black Mag factory in May 2010 killed two workers.
OSHA found dozens of serious health and safety violations and originally fined the company $1.2 million. But New Hampshire Public Radio reports that the agreement means Black Mag will not have to pay the fine. OSHA said the goal was to protect workers and not collect a fine. And a lawyer for Black Mag told NHPR the company didn't have any assets anyway.
