Fairlee, Vermont - July 1, 2011
The town of Fairlee is celebrating its 250th birthday this year.
One of the oldest buildings in town is the railroad station right on Route 5 Inmates from the Southeast State Correctional Facility are giving the station a new coat of paint in time for 250th parties planned all weekend long.
The Green Mountain Flyer will be giving train rides at the station. It's the oldest standing station in the state, built in the mid 1800s.
"The town has owned it since 1972 when the railroad closed it. It's getting repainted this week in its original Boston and Maine colors and it is fun seeing it re-emerge in those more vibrant colors than what it has been for the last 30 or so years. Cleaning up brush around it so people can get off the train and have the feeling of boarding the passenger cars of a period railway station," said Jay Barrett, a Fairlee selectman.
Fairlee will cap off its Independence Day celebrations with a parade and fireworks on the 4th.
