Essex Jct church hall destroyed by fire

Essex Junction, Vermont - July 6, 2011

Lightning destroyed a landmark in Essex Junction Wednesday. Just after 3 p.m., severe storms swept through the area and a lightning strike sparked a fire at the parish hall next to the Holy Family Catholic Church, a few hundred feet from the Five Corners.

The parish priest had just returned from exercise class to find the hall on fire, with flames shooting from all corners of the old wooden building.

The bishop was also on scene to witness the fire, as were countless people in the village. The hall was an old barn converted to hold functions-- a place to provide comfort after a funeral or to hold religious classes.

While the parish hall may be gone, the church which stands just yards away is safe. There was no damage to the church that Father Charles Ranges said was built in 1895.

No one was injured in the fire. One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation, but officials say it was not serious.
