Burlington, Vermont - July 7, 2011
A former bookkeeper pleaded not guilty to federal embezzlement charges Thursday.
Prosecutors say Nancy Poirier, 42, of Williamstown, stole nearly a quarter of a million dollars from Trono Fuels over a five-year period starting in 2005.
She is facing federal charges because the company receives federal money to help low-income Vermonters pay for fuel.
Even though Poirier allegedly stole hundreds of thousands of dollars, taxpayers will have to pay for her defense. She claims she only has $500 left and the judge approved a public defender.
