Vt State Police to investigate Hartford force case

July 8, 2011

WATERBURY, Vt. (AP) - Detectives from the Vermont State Police Bureau of Criminal Investigation have been assigned to investigate an incident in which Hartford police reportedly handcuffed and hit with a flashlight a man involved in a minor traffic accident.

Hartford officials asked for the investigation.

Darrek Daoust, 49, says he was pulled from his home after he crashed his van, left it in a ditch and walked home.

It was the third case in the past year in which a Hartford resident was injured while being detained by police at or near home. All three cases were referred to the state for review.

State Police say that once their investigation into the Hartford investigation is complete it will be turned over to the attorney general's office for review.
