Burlington police call man's death suspicious

Burlington, Vermont - July 20, 2011

Still no ID on a man found dead near the Winooski River in Burlington, but police say his death is very suspicious.

Investigators are still combing the scene near a train trestle known as the Blue Bridge.

Police say the man suffered multiple injuries and it appears he fell 40 feet from the bridge to a wooded area below. But police are focusing on what happened on the bridge before the man fell. Blood samples were taken from the tracks, but it's unclear whose blood it is.

Police say a passerby reported the body last night. But they won't say if that person is a suspect in a crime.

"We do not know the consequences that befell the victim but we can say with absolute certainty this was not the case of a slip and fall," Burlington Police Lt. Jennifer Morrison said.

The man has not yet been identified, but police say he is not missing Essex man Bill Currier.

This man is described as white, in his late 40s to early 50s, 5'8"-5'10", 160-175 lbs., with blonde-gray hair and a light-colored mustache.

An autopsy is expected to determine the cause of his death.

Anyone with any information about the victim or what might have happened to him is urged to call Burlington Police at 802-540-2222.
