The 9-1-1 call came into the Brattleboro Barracks around 11 am. A passing motorist spotted a body along this wooded stretch of road in Dummerston.
"At this point in time we can tell you we are investigating this as a suspicious death," says Maj. Ed Ledo of the Vermont State Police.
Investigators say they're leaning toward homicide. But they still don't know much about the victim aside from the fact she is a white female in her 30s to 40s.
"It's not a normal thing to have a body off the side of the road with nobody else around. And there's no indication of self-harm," says Maj. Ledo.
The state police mobile command center rolled onto the scene about 5 pm -- pulled from its post in Northern New Hampshire leaving the search for Celina Cass to help investigators in southern Vermont figure out who this woman is and how she may have died.
"We're going to document everything and we're just going to move this thing along at a slow pace and do it the right way," says Maj. Ledo.
And that included shutting down this heavily travelled road. Troopers diverted traffic and curious passers-by to protect the crime scene. Police would not confirm or deny if the victim had been shot and say they will continue to collect clues throughout the night.
Now police still have not determined the cause or manner of the victim's death. Her body is being transported to Burlington and waiting autopsy by the medical examiner. Those autopsy results are expected by mid to late afternoon tomorrow.
