Police ID victim, suspect in deadly shooting at Brattleboro Co-op

Brattleboro, Vermont - August 9, 2011

Employees of the Brattleboro Food Co-op shared hugs and offered condolences in the store's parking lot.

Police responded to the co-op just after 8 a.m. for a report of an unresponsive man. Inside, they found Michael Martin, 59, of Dummerston, who died from an apparent gunshot wound. Police quickly located the suspect, Richard Gagnon, 59, of Marlboro. Both men worked at the store.

"Currently, the office of the chief medical examiner, the Vermont State Crime lab and representatives from the Windham County State's Attorney office are providing resources toward that investigation," Brattleboro Police Chief Eugene Wrinn said.

This is the second shooting connected to this Southern Vermont Community in a little over three weeks and community members are concern about what seems to be a growing level of violence around town.

"I wish I could say I'm surprised, but Brattleboro, it's been getting so bad lately," said Caleb Adler of Brattleboro.

Adler is the cousin of David Snow, who was stabbed to death two streets over in June 2009. The altercation was over $50. More recently, Frank Caraballo of Massachusetts was arrested for allegedly killing a Bellow Falls woman in nearby Dummerston. Police say Caraballo tracked Melissa Barratt down at a Brattleboro apartment.

"It's getting bad. I'd like to see something done about this. Getting worse and worse every year," Adler said.

Police are not saying what sparked the shooting. Co-op employees declined to talk on camera, but one woman said this has left them all in shock, especially since both men were well-liked.

The co-op was closed Tuesday. It's unclear if it will reopen Wednesday.

Gagnon will be arraigned Wednesday. He is being held without bail.
