Montpelier, Vermont -- August 16, 2011
The Shumlin administration is saying no to a proposed tax on soda and other sugar-sweetened beverages.
The tax would add one cent for every ounce of the drink -- about 60 cents per 2-liter bottle of soda.
Supporters of the tax say it could raise $30 million and help combat obesity.
But the state health commissioner says Gov. Peter Shumlin doesn't like the idea of imposing a new state tax on the drinks, even if they contribute to health problems.
