It was the first major tropical system to hit Vermont in nearly a decade. And Tropical Storm Irene hit hard. She first dumped several inches of rain in the southern part of the state, like in Wilmington.
The Deerfield River rose several feet over its banks, closing Routes 9 and 100 and isolating the town. The water also swept away a young woman as her boyfriend watched. A body was recovered in the area Sunday evening. Police have not confirmed if this was the same woman.
In Bennington, another dramatic scene. A car was traveling at a high rate of speed, but not down the road-- down the Roaring Branch River. Fortunately no one was in the vehicle.
And in Ludlow, someone lost a sailboat. It was carried away by rushing debris in the river.
And covered bridges across the state fell victim to rising rivers from Tropical Storm Irene. In Rockingham, the historic 150-foot long Bartonsville Covered Bridge fell into the Williams River.
A similar scene in Quechee. A majority of the Quechee Bridge was washed away by the Ottauquchee River. Most of downtown Quechee was underwater, including the Simon Pearce Mill. With scenes like this, Gov. Peter Shumlin sent out a message to Vermonters during the Channel 3 News at 6 p.m.
"The message from me: Vermonters, let's use common sense. The worst could still lie ahead of us. Downed powerlines, flooded roads, do not drive into standing water. We can replace roads, we can replace bridges and buildings, we cannot replace people," said Shumlin, D-Vermont.
We are still receiving reports of evacuations across the state. It has stopped raining in many areas, but officials say many rivers have yet to crest, so the flooding is still expected to get worst.
And a big thank you to all the WCAX viewers who sent in video and pictures Sunday. Due to the flooding it was impossible for us to get to all of the hardest hit areas because so many roads were closed. All the video in this story was provided to us by our viewers.
