Investigators probe Burlington fire

Burlington, Vermont - September 6, 2011

Investigators are trying to determine what sparked a fire that ripped through a historic building in downtown Burlington Monday night. And they say the damage might not have been so severe if people had called 911 sooner.

Not much remains of the building at the intersection of Pearl and North Union Streets. It housed a number of dentist and orthodontic offices. Investigators are focusing on an area in the center of the building on the first floor.

"We have narrowed it down to a specific area regionally within the building, it's an area about 6x8, problem is, is we can't get in that area to excavate because of the amount of debris that is literally resting in that area, moving that material would cause parts of the building to collapse on us," explained Battalion Chief Terry Francis of the Burlington Fire Department.

Investigators say this fire is a good example of when you hear an alarm-- call 911. A number of people reported hearing an alarm in the area for half an hour, but thought it was a car alarm and no one called 911 until it was too late. An engineer will inspect the building to see if it can be saved.
