Early morning fatal fire in Morrisville

Morrisville, Vermont - September 19, 2011

One person was killed and about 30 others have been left homeless by a fire in Morrisville Monday morning.

The blaze broke out at around 1:30 at Wickart Apartments on Brooklyn Street. Witnesses say the flames reached 40 feet in the air. When crews arrived apartment number nine was fully engulfed. The resident, 48-year-old Heather Manley, was killed. Her neighbor, Jonathan Nielsen, was injured while trying to rescue her. He is in hospital with first and second degree burns.

"They live just two doors down. He heard the alarm, so her doors were all locked so he went around in back and they broke her glass door and she was in the kitchen on the floor and so he dragged her out and him and my mom got her out, then they just went around to everybody, getting everybody out," said Becky Nielsen, a witness.

All 13 apartments in the complex were evacuated. The Red Cross is helping the residents displaced by the fire.

Local police and fire are waiting for state fire investigators to determine the cause, but it is not considered suspicious.
