Swanton, Vermont - September 29, 2011
Surveillance video shows a store clerk
disarming a would-be robber.
A man wearing a ski mask entered the
Tractor Supply Store in Swanton just after 6 p.m. He immediately approaches the
female clerk, there's some brief discussion, and then he points a loaded gun at
her and demands money.
The female clerk backs away and a male
clerk steps next to the register, and shortly after, he lunges at the robber
and wrestles the gun from him.
Police say this was a risky move, but
no one was injured and the robber fled without any money.
"He was just trying
to assist to the female clerk that was approached initially. The robber was
very close up to her when this happened and I think that he felt he was coming
to her assistance. I don't think being a hero ever came into his thought process.
He seemed like a very well put together gentleman and thought he was doing the
right thing," said Det. Kevin Bushey of the Franklin County Sheriff's
Office.
Police are hoping the gun
recovered from the scene will help them figure out who the robber is. Police
are withholding the brand, but it's described it as a very unique, small,
silver pistol.
Witnesses say the robber
is a white man, about 5'8", 150 pounds who may have dark facial hair.
