A warm and welcome gift to flood victims

October 1, 2011 - Northfield, Vermont

Saturday, six and eight-year-olds Bella and Ellie Wawrzyniak received brand new sweatshirts. The shirts are just two of 18-thousand garments Carhartt is giving to Vermont flood victims.

"Mommy and daddy got gloves" shares one girl.

Bella and Ellie's mother Katie Wawrzyniak says she's grateful for all the support they've received. With more than 20-thousand dollars worth of repair needed at their home, she says every bit helps.

"Some of the support we've gotten financially hasn't necessarily replaced the things we need to replace but it's helped us pay for those things by not having to pay for other things." says Katie.

Mark McCarthy, a Carhartt Distributor comments, "We've gone out into some of the hardest hit communities, and we've been distributing some of this great Carhartt product to those people that did suffer some major losses in the flooding about a month or so ago."

Mark McCarthy with Lenny's Shoe and Apparel is distributing the clothing from Carhartt. Town officials and relief coordinators and handing out vouchers to affected people in their areas, which can be turned in for gear.

"It's the stuff that these people you know need as we do the cleanup process." he adds.

So far, organizers say they've given away thousands of pieces of clothing in Berlin, Moretown, and West Hartford. After Northfield, they'll stop in West Woodstock, Waitsfield and Rochester.

McCarthy tells us, "We have a lot left and we're going to continue for the couple of weeks trying to get as much out there as we can."

McCarthy says it's a good feeling to see smiles in Irene's bleak aftermath.
