Judge: Republicans violated Vt campaign finance law

Montpelier, Vermont - October 6, 2011

A Superior Court judge says Republicans violated Vermont campaign finance laws during the 2010 governor's race.

At issue-- a pair of television ads that the Republican Governors Association ran, one supporting Brian Dubie, the other attacking Peter Shumlin. The Attorney General says the RGA did not file necessary paperwork with the state and accepted contributions in excess of the state's $2,000 limit.

The judge sided with the state, rejecting the RGA's claims that it was not subject to Vermont law and that the ads were exempt because they were about issues not candidates.
