Pumpkin Regatta draws a crowd

Burlington, Vermont - October 9, 2011

Thousands lined the Burlington waterfront Sunday to watch paddlers who were literally and figuratively out of their gourd.

"Every year I think it can't get any bigger and it does. It just blows me away the thousands and thousands of people who have come down here," said Lisa Quinlan with the Lake Champlain Chamber of Commerce, one of the organizers of the 4th Annual Pumpkin Regatta.

The event is a benefit for the PILOT high school leadership program.
Quinlan says the shallow and oblong pumpkins tend to be faster.

But the real key: "cheating -- that'll get you every time. Cheating is the way to go," said one paddler.

Jim Daly, the winner of the sponsor's race, didn't need to cheat.
He used his canoeing experience to cruise past the competition.
"Looked around once, didn't see anyone behind me, so I started doing those 360's," he said.

But Channel Three's Jennifer Reading said she didn't have an ethical problem with foul play in the media challenge. "Gina and I are going to band together and take everyone else down," she said.

"Tom Messner -- he thinks he's got it. Every year, he like paddles all year long to get ready for this," Gina Bullard said.

While underway, Bullard and Reading encountered the unexpected -- water balloons.
They fell behind despite their slight head start, but Bullard jumped in at the last minute to ensure Reading's victory.

A hollow win, in some hollowed out veggie vessels.
