Migrant farmworker supporters meet with governor

Montpelier, Vermont - October 14, 2011

Supporters of migrant workers who were detained by Vermont State police in September met with Gov. Peter Shumlin Friday.

The group talked to the governor for about 15 minutes.

They went on to speak with members of the state's legal counsel.

They asked the governor for changes to policing policy across the state.

"I am convinced that had we been white, the trooper would not have asked for our documents and addressed us the way he did," said Danilo Lopez, of the Vermont Migrant Farmworkers Solidarity Project.

The state police advisory commission said earlier this week that the trooper involved in the stop did nothing wrong.

It determined the trooper followed proper procedure when he asked for identification from the two Mexican men.
