Remains of Pete the Moose recovered

Waterbury, Vermont - October 20, 2011

It's believed Vermont wildlife officials have recovered the remains of Pete the Moose.

Irasburg preserve owner Doug Nelson says the animal died several weeks ago after being over-tranquilized during a hoof-trimming procedure. Nelson brought wildlife officials to a moose carcass on the preserve and told them it was Pete. The remains, however, are so badly decomposed that officials are unable to test the dead animal for chronic wasting disease.

Vt. Fish and Wildlife Commissioner Patrick Berry could not guarantee that the animal was Pete, but did say the carcass appeared to have had its hooves trimmed, and the Nelsons say they only performed that procedure on Pete.

The Nelsons will not face any sanctions for the animal's death because the rules governing the preserve were not in place before Pete died.
