Teachers' strike enters 2nd week

Bennington, Vermont - October 23, 2011

Bennington area teachers and school board members agreed to take a break over the weekend after meeting face-to-face for the first time since teachers hit the picket lines.

The teachers strike is entering it's second week but negotiators for both sides say a framework for discussions has been established and talks are expected to continue Monday.

"We would have liked to have not had a strike and make the commitment to the association that we would meet for however long it took to settle the contract," said Timothy Holbrook, a School Board Member.

"There is a bottom line, a fair contract. And the teachers' definition of fair is fair for them fair for the communities -- you know the men and women who pay the bills and fair for the schools," said Darren Allen with the Vermont NEA.

And while school is still closed, the local school board ruled that varsity athletics can continue. Tune in to that story Monday on the Channel 3 News at 6.
