Some state employees still stuck at home after Irene

Waterbury, Vermont -- October 26, 2011

A dozen state employees still have not returned to work following Tropical Storm Irene.

The 700,000-square foot state office complex was flooded during the storm and sustained heavy damage.

1,500 workers are now in temporary offices. According to the Burlington Free Press, the department of mental health has 12 state hospital employees who have not been reassigned either because their jobs don't exist or the positions have been shifted too far away for them to travel.

State officials say they will keep getting paid, even though it's unclear when and where they might be needed again.
