A new take on a classic snack

Essex, Vermont - November 14, 2011

Many people remember eating Chex Mix when they were a kid. Now one Vermont woman is taking her Dad's recipe of that classic to the next level.

At the Whitby house you don't have to go far for a snack. That's because Jennifer Whitby makes Mahue Mix in the family kitchen-- it's snack mix with a kick.

"We like to call it a party or snack mix but its a blend of spices that makes it uniquely tasty," Whitby said.

But we're not going to tell you how to make this mix--it's her Dad's secret recipe. "He would just have the spices on the counter and say, 'oh a little bit of this, a little bit more,' and then he'd dump this in," she said.

Reporter Gina Bullard: "When people compare it to Chex Mix what do you say?"

Jennifer Whitby: "I say yeah, it's like that, but nothing like you've tasted before."

The only thing we do know -- there's peanuts, pretzels, Chex, cashews and Cheese-itz in the bowl. Another hint -- fish -- which is the main ingredient in Worcestershire sauce.

"There are so many spices. I have people all the time ask me and I say it's dads secret, I'm not telling you," Whitby said.

Mayhue Mix only comes in one flavor for now -- her dads. Whitby says the old saying holds true, if it ain't broke, don't fix it. She sells the party mix online, at the Vermont Gift Barn and Cold Hollow Cider Mill.

"We had to make sure we had "Vermont Made" on there. People are just excited about Vermont products," Whitby said.

A Made in Vermont product that's hard to keep your hands off of.
