Police search for suspect, motive in Bethel murder

Emma Jozefiak Emma Jozefiak

Bethel, Vermont - November 14, 2011

Vermont State Police say they are looking for the suspect or suspects in the killing of a 48-year-old Bethel man and attempted killing of a 19-year-old woman.

Dennis Hill stayed home from work Monday.  He is still in shock about the death of his brother, 48 year old Scott Hill. "It freaked me out. I can't believe somebody did that," he said.

During a welfare check Friday morning, Scott Hill was found dead inside his home on Dartt Hill Road in Bethel.  Troopers also found 19-year-old Emma Jozefiak. She was unconscious and unresponsive.  She was taken to the hospital with life threatening injuries.  Hospital officials say her condition has stabilized.

"I don't know her at all.  I don't know nothing about that," Hill said.

The young woman's family says Jozefiak would spend nights at Hill's home.  Investigators have not revealed any details about the alleged crime -- like what happened to Hill and Jozefiak -- or a motive.  But police say a third person was involved.

Reporter Matt Henson: "A lot of people say your brother was heavily involved in drugs. What is your reaction to that?"

Dennis Hill: "I don't know.  I don't do drugs myself."

Jozefiak is a recent graduate of South Royalton High School where she was a star soccer and basketball player

"I feel she really cared about the players, she really tried to help a lot, improving our skills and was a good teammate," said Eliza Phillips, a former teammate of Jozefiak.

While teammates has high praise for their former captain, her friends were not so kind.  They all declined to speak on camera -- afraid of retaliation.  Many said the 19-year-old recently became involved with the wrong crowd and was using drugs.  People in town say kids using drugs has become an increasing problem in this small rural community.

"Drugs is kind of a way out for everybody, other than trying to find something productive to do, but that's hard in an area like this," said Kristy Brunell, a local resident.
