Burlington schools to serve up dinner

Burlington, Vermont - November 17, 2011

The Burlington School District will soon serve dinner to needy kids.

Starting in December, kids at certain schools like Wheeler and Barnes, and the Burlington Boys & Girls Club, will begin to be offered dinner daily.

Burlington schools already serve breakfast, lunch and snacks to kids. But officials say since the need for those free and reduced meals has gone up; they assume many are not eating dinner at home.

"The light's going to be shined on it right now. It's the holidays, but people need to recognize kids are hungry all the time. Families are struggling and schools play an important role in making ends meet," said Doug Davis of the Burlington School District.

The district says this won't cost taxpayers any money, fundraising and partnerships with community organizations will keep the program running.
